Getting a Good Night's Sleep Every
Night
Teaching a new baby to adjust to your
normal sleep pattern is a challenge for
all new parents and all the time spent on
this teaching & training in the
beginning will make sure you receive the
benefits in the months ahead of you.
Our new baby advice guide has some good
tips so that both you & your baby can
get a good night's rest all the time!
Establish Set Routines
A good night kiss, a stroke of the
baby's head before sleep and many other
small actions can calm the baby; bathing
him/her just before bed-time is also a
calming action. But you must repeat the
patterns every day so they become the
"normal" routine and when the baby becomes
used to and familiar with the routine it
will know that it is these actions that
are associated with the time to sleep.
Your baby shouild always sleep in the same
place as this will set up a routine that
he/she will adjust to quite quickly.
Music
Soft classical (for example piano) or
lullaby-type music will calm the new baby
as will white-noise CD's. The hum of a
vacuum cleaner also has a soothing effect
but simply some classical music playing
softly on a radio near the bassinette is
usually very effective.
Temperature - Hot/Cold
Make sure that the temperature of the
baby's room is not too cold nor too hot
and that the baby is in a place that is
away from any drafts, noises or
distractions that could cause him/her to
wake up. Music playing will also help hide
excess noises.
Sleeping During The Day
Day
time is for napping only - night-time is
for sleeping soundly. Shorten all sleep
time during the day - if the baby sleeps
too much during the day then he/she may
not be able to sleep as well at night.
When the baby is sleeping/napping in
the day time keep the lights on and try
not to give the baby any idea that it is
bed time so always avoid your night
pattern. There is no need to wake the baby
from sleeping but if conditions are
brighter and a bit noisier then your baby
will wake up on its own. Don't be quiet
around the house ... the baby needs to
know the difference between night and day,
napping and sleeping and the quicker you
can teach the baby the difference the
quicker you will have a good night's
sleep.
Rocking and Massaging
Rocking & gently massaging your
baby will relax him/her and this is
generally a good prelude or introduction
to sleeping right throughout the
night.
Reading Aloud to the Baby
Read a story and/or spend time with the
baby before bed, simply chating and
playing with him/her, instead of just
putting the baby in the bed and leaving.
The time doing this will assist the baby
in the transition from wakefulness to
sleep and it only has to be for a few
minutes or so and your baby will drift off
to sleep.
Feeding
Make sure the baby is always getting
fresh foods; nutrition is especially
important. Try not to feed the baby in the
middle of the night as it is unnecessary
and this will prevent a baby from learning
that night time is the sleeping time, not
the feeding time; keep the lights in the
room dimmed so as to not disturb the
baby's sense of time. Make sure that it is
quiet at night & the opposite during
the daytime with plenty of noise and lots
of activity. Babies need to learn the
difference between night & day and
they will only learn this from you so you
need to be quite clear on the process you
will follow to teach the baby this
difference.
